Muse and Kasabian Reign Supreme at Shockwaves NME Awards

The mighty Muse and band of the moment, Kasabian, are tied for the top spot after winning two awards each at the Shockwaves NME Awards 2010! Muse claim the awards for Best British Band and Best Website while Kasabian bag Best Album and Best Album Artwork for West Rider Pauper Lunatic Asylum. These two musical powerhouses cement their positions as the biggest bands in the UK by picking up the most coveted awards of the night.

Carrying on her winning streak Lady Gaga receives the Best Dressed accolade…..only to be awarded a double whammy by the fans as they vote her Worst Dressed as well! Another leading lady of the night was La Roux who went ‘In For The Kill’ and bagged her first NME award for Best Dancefloor Filler.

Ahead of her retirement, Lily Allen picks up one last statue for her mantle – the Giving It Back Fans Award which recognises the act that goes the extra mile to really look after fans. Lily becomes the inaugural winner of this award after staging treasure hunts all over the globe so lucky punters who found the tickets could get into her world tour for free.

Elsewhere in the live arena Britpop legends Blur bag Best Live Event for their gig at Hyde Park; their first major show since reforming and Arctic Monkey’s are named Best Live Band after a sell out tour in 2009.

After playing the sell-out Shockwaves NME Awards Tour, The Big Pink and Bombay Bicycle Club have clearly won over the fans and have been voted the winners of Best Track (‘Dominoes’) and Best New Band respectively.

Proving what a great year 2009 has been for them, American rockers Paramore are the surprise winners of the night collecting the Best International Band award.

NME Editor Krissi Murison, who presides over her first NME Awards ceremony said: “A staggering 3.6million votes have been cast this year proving that music fans are as passionate as ever. It’s great to see Muse and Kasabian now firmly established as rock royalty and a host of really exciting new bands coming through to scoop top awards like Best Track. If these awards are anything to go by 2010 will be a great year for music”.

The elusive Modfather, Paul Weller, closes the show with a knock out performance of songs picked from across his music career. Joining him on stage is ex-Oasis Gem Archer on guitar. Weller picked up the night’s most prestigious honour, the Godlike Genius Award presented to him by alumni Bobby Gillespie and Mick Jones.

Ahead of their Shockwaves NME Awards Big Gig, The Specials collect this year’s Teenage Cancer Trust Outstanding Contribution award before taking to the stage with a knockout performance of ‘Too Much Too Young’ and ‘Gangsters’.

The winners from the world of film and television are The Mighty Boosh (Best DVD) and The Inbetweeners (Best TV) and Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds pick up Best Film. Unfortunately there are also losers on the night and this year Kanye West is named Villain Of The Year while the Jonas Brothers are awarded both Worst Band and Worst Album!

As usual, the awards are a hot ticket and stars pack into the legendary O2 Academy Brixton for an evening of live performance and rock and roll debauchery all held together by the host, Jarvis Cocker. This year there are live performances from Kasabian with special guest Noel Fielding, the hotly anticipated return of Courtney Love and the re-formed Hole playing new single ‘Samantha’; genius collaborations come from Lily Allen and The Big Pink with a mash-up of ‘Dominoes’ and ‘You’re So Vain’, as well as Scot rockers Biffy Clyro partnering Welsh songbird Marina and the Diamonds.

Music fans can tune into Channel 4 on Friday 26th February 2010, 11.25pm to catch all the action from the awards.
