Having spent 2009 cementing their reputation as one of the most exciting and vital new bands in the UK, The Joy Formidable return with a new single and a debut album for 2010.
‘Popinjay’ is an early taster for the band’s debut album, due in the summer, and melds Ritzy Bryan’s vocals, by turns honeyed and strident, to a gargantuan guitar hook and a wall of noise and melody that is rapidly becoming the band’s signature sound.
The ascent of The Joy Formidable has been a completely home grown affair. Their self contained approach to all areas of their music, from writing through production to release and artwork may well signal a way forward for other acts but, in their case, is more indicative of the creative minds at work within the trio than a desire to act as flag bearers for a new way to be recording artists. A series of sold out UK tours throughout 2009 saw the band establish a formidable fanbase and a hard earned reputation for incendiary live shows. Supports with Editors, The Temper Trap and Passion Pit amongst others, both in the UK, Europe and Japan has swelled that fanbase further and the band are currently celebrating a sold out US shows at Brooklyn’s Union Hall and New York City’s Pianos.
To coincide with the single, The Joy Formidable play their most extensive set of UK dates throughout March with a very special headline show at London’s Electric Ballroom, their biggest headline show to date, including a hometown North Wales show at Wrexham’s Central Station and finishing up in Scotland. Prior to that, the trio support The Temper Trap throughout Europe in February.
