New Model Army – Today Is A Good Day

Keeping them as politically relevant as up to date as possible, New Model Army return string effort. Opening with the rather metal leaning titular opening track it seems that the band have been taking lessons in other departments in order to keep their sound fresh. So it’s a guitar heavy album which is due thanks to Sullivan’s collection of talented musicians.

Don’t let that overshadow the more subliminal work going on in the album – be it percussion or synthesized. Today is a Good Day is continuation of a 30 year strong talent that never seems to take too much of a break. NMA have had the odd rest, but nothing so lengthy that you’d wonder if they had disbanded.

Justin Sullivan’s lyrics are vocal work are as recognisable as he has always been. If anything stylistically hasn’t changed over the years then it is NMA’s leading man. But neither has his ability to stray through different musical conventions and bring them all together in a carnival show of tales told and worlds viewed.

It ends perhaps not as strong as it starts – but it’s still a worthy addition to their back catalogue of very influential music. This won’t be the album will be remembered for, but it will be an album that fans will remember. It’s also nice to see that artist, poet Joolz is still providing them with cover art.
