Codeine Velvet Club – Vanity Kills

Codeine Velvet Club have a combination of musical talent that on paper most would expect them to be shooting straight off for great things on the chart…. However unfortunately it’s not the case.

After a bumpy start for the Scottish band fronted by Lou Hickey and Jon Lawler (of The Fratellis)this is their second attempt at this single release, after their first attempt failed to even enter the charts. There isn’t anything that particularly stands out to being the reason why this band and this single shouldn’t do well, or didn’t.

This track ‘Vanity Kills’ has plenty of helpings of big swing style band meets silky smooth Jazz with dollops of something from the 1960’s slapped all over it. This teamed with lashes of vocals from Miss Hickey its sure to get us coming back for seconds? However in all honesty it feels stuck in first gear, Lawler doesn’t add anything to the tune and it just plods through the three minutes thirty.

Bit of a shame because it could do so much more.
