Mother Mother – Hay Loft

Adventure and rhythm tick along neatly, before quirkily cosmopolitan vocals make a dart between Nu Wave, Nu Rav, twisted folk and quirky indie. Vancouver’s, Mother Mother uses the winding single ‘Hay Loft’, to show off their adventurously expansive ways.

Saucy provocative vocals provided by Molly, are joined by the mildly panicky punch of Ryan. This latter element adds a bit of fire to the belly. Although, overall, it’s the rustling percussive nudge of Ali that creates a firm base from which to adventure from.

Melodious trickling acoustic led B-side ‘Wrecking Ball’, sees the vocals taking on an ironically plodding pace in order to deliver the destructive lyrics:

“I made a wreck out of my hand, I put it through the wall. I made a fist and not a plan; call me a reckless wrecking ball.”

All this combines to produce a delightful pop melody that The Magic Numbers would commit incest for. Mother Mother are building up sumptuously to their upcoming second album, ‘O My Heart’ and it has the potential to have you saying Florence and the who??
