Synth happy – pop friendly electro wonder fortune have a very accessible sound going for them that transcends some of the more enjoyable aspects of a whole range of musical sounds.
Quite what their agenda is in the music business is quite a disorientating one. Their content focus (or lack of) is perhaps their selling point. But it would have been nice if the musical sound could have at least stayed as eclectic as it appeared in the album opener “under the Sun.” Here after they seem to pick elements of that song and run with truer sounding songs that are much easier to relate to – But again this is something that works against them as they did so well at the beginning. Their apparent need to make their sound become more simplified in following tracks only serves to disrupt a starling opening.
Any other band out there can sound pure electro, or punk, jazz, alternative etc. But few can combine them all together into a unified whole and make it sound great. Fortune can – but they chose not to across the board.
There are still some great tunes on here – and they deserve to get some warranted attention for their efforts. Don’t think this album is ever a disappointment in that they have failed by any standards other than an audience expectation set too high. Without this bar “Staring At The Ice Melt” is a wonderful album.
