Last Winter saw the long awaited UK release of Athens, Georgia quintet Dead Confederate’s debut album, ‘Wrecking Ball’. Reflecting its high critical acclaim in the US, the band also made a splash on UK shores, catching the eye of the UK music press and touring with the likes of A Place to Bury Strangers, Dinosaur Jr and J Mascis & the Fog.
This spring Dead Confederate return with the second single to be taken from Wrecking Ball. ‘Start Me Laughing’ will be released on May 31st through Kartel, backed with album opener ‘Heavy Petting’. The release coincides with the band’s UK tour, which includes appearances at The Great Escape, Dot to Dot and a London headline show (details below).
“Start Me Laughing was a last minute addition to Wrecking Ball. It was a song we had played live for a while, but hadn't really considered for the album. As the recording continued, it started to seem more and more like a song that fit with the theme and vibe of the record, so we tried it on one of the last days of tracking” explains vocalist/guitarist Hardy Morris. “I wrote the song when I was angry, but it is supposed to sound like a release of anger; to remind people to laugh at their mistakes…it's supposed to be a happy song.”
The single and tour are a precursor for Dead Confederate’s second album, which is currently in the final stages of recording and mixing, ready for release later this year.
Speaking on the new album, Morris says “Our new record is going to be a bit more upbeat. It has moments that are heavier and darker than the last record, but there are lots of songs that are different for us. It's been a challenge to put it all together.
“Our other recordings have kind of had this one vibe across the whole thing and this album has a lot more going on. It should be interesting; we actually used major chords this time!”
