The MOJO Honours List, the most respected of all music magazine awards ceremonies, will announce the 2010 nominations alongside a duo of incredible free performances at HMV’s Oxford Street flagship store on Tuesday 4 May.
Raising the roof and breaking their one-London-show-per-year tradition, space rock legends Hawkwind have confirmed to perform as well as rising breakthrough rock’n’soul act The Jim Jones Revue.
As well as these sterling performances, the MOJO Honours List nominations for the five, public voted, best-of-the-year categories will also be revealed at 6pm on 4 May. The categories are Best Album, Best Live Act, Breakthrough Act, Best Compilation and Song Of the Year.
The winners of The 2010 MOJO Honours List will be announced at the ceremony attended by legends of music, unsung heroes as well as a host of contemporary talent, on Thursday 10 June at The Brewery, London.
MOJO’s editor-in-chief and awards host Phil Alexander said “While the MOJO Honours List revolves around the concept of rewarding career-long achievements, we are equally proud to support the very best in new music. This year’s nominees will reflect that and are bound to offer a suitable antidote to the glut of pre-processed pop that’s out there right now. Having Hawkwind and the Jim Jones Revue perform is an honour in itself and reflects the magazine’s ethos of championing music that’s built to last.”
The MOJO Honours List nominations launch is a celebration of the wide range of spectacular, timeless music to feature in MOJO magazine every month and takes place via a free to attend evening session in the heart of London at HMV in what has now become a hugely anticipated annual fixture. Previous acts that have played the launch include Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, Rufus Wainwright, Kasabian, The Fall, Teenage Fanclub, Elbow and Roy Harper. Hawkwind and the Jim Jones Revue now join that illustrious list.
Simon Winter, Live Manager at official retail partner HMV, which has supported this event since its launch in 2004, adds: “The announcement of the Mojo Honours List nominees at HMV Oxford Street just keeps getting bigger with each year, and is now a key and very cool date in our events calendar that our customers and staff really look forward to. It’s not every day that you can walk in off the street and get to see inspirational Rock icons and legends performing live instore and then meet them after. HMV is really proud to be associated with the MOJO Honours List.”
Hawkwind, early purveyors of space rock and noted precursors to punk, were formed back in 1969 by singer-songwriter and guitarist Dave Brock. Since then, Hawkwind have gone through many incarnations and transcended musical genres but remain a hugely vital and unique force in British music, influencing everyone from the Sex Pistols to Joy Division and The Orb.
Joining them on the MOJO Honours List line-up are the Jim Jones Revue, one of Britain’s hottest rock acts right now and one of the band’s tipped by MOJO at the start of the year. Described as a sulphurous mix of Little Richard’s raunchiness and The Stooges’s brand of incendiary gutter-wise rock’n’roll, the London-based five-piece have just returned from hugely acclaimed shows at SXSW and are working on a new album with Bad Seeds percussion legend Jim Scalvunos which is set for release later in the year. The MOJO Honours List launch will be the last chance for UK fans to see the Jim Jones Revue until October.
