Florence Leads The Mojo Honours List
MOJO Magazine announced today the nominations for The 2010 MOJO Honours List as voted for by readers of the magazine online at link. The winners will be revealed on Thursday 10 June as the MOJO world of music legends, contemporary artists and unsung heroes gather together at the Brewery in London.
Now in its 7th year, the MOJO Honours List reflects MOJO magazine’s ethos of celebrating music that is built to last. MOJO Magazine is now the UK’s biggest-selling music magazine, and The MOJO Honours List has become the most respected of all music magazine awards ceremonies, featuring five public nominated categories that reflect the best in contemporary new talent alongside a series of merit awards that are decided by MOJO Magazine and which celebrate career-long achievements.
Nominated in every relevant category, London’s Florence And The Machine lead the way with a massive four award nominations. Ten months after the release of the critically acclaimed debut album ‘Lungs’, Florence And The Machine has genuinely established herself as one of the UK’s biggest acts and MOJO Reader’s agree, short-listing her for Best Album Sponsored By Ford Transit, Breakthrough Act, Best Live Act Sponsored By Red Stripe and Song Of The Year with ‘You’ve Got The Love’.
Leicester agitators Kasabian receive three nominations including Best Live Act, Song Of the Year for ‘Fire’ and Best Album for acclaimed third album, ‘West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum’. Flying the flag for Sheffield and receiving two nominations each are Arctic Monkeys and Richard Hawley. They will battle it out together for Song Of The Year for ‘Crying Lightning’ and ‘Open Up Your Door’ respectively, with Arctic Monkeys receiving a second nomination for Best Live Act and Richard Hawley up for Best Album for his sixth solo album ‘Truelove’s Gutter’.
Joining the Best Album nominations are Joanna Newsom’s stunning triple album ‘Have One On Me’ and Paul Weller’s recently released ‘Wake Up The Nation’. Completing the Best Live Act category are Midlake and Rufus Wainwright, whilst Rage Against The Machine’s surprise 2009 Christmas Number 1, ‘Killing In The Name’ is the final nominee for Song Of The Year.
The Breakthrough Act, one of the most sought after MOJO Honours List awards, throws a spotlight on new talent destined for mass appeal, an honour previously awarded to White Lies, The Last Shadow Puppets, Seasick Steve, Corinne Bailey Rae and The Magic Numbers. The 2010 nominees are Florence And The Machine, The Jim Jones Revue, John Grant, The Low Anthem and Mumford And Sons.
It was also announced today that space rock legends Hawkwind, will be honoured with the 2010 MOJO Maverick Award. Formed back in 1969 by singer-songwriter and guitarist Dave Brock, Hawkwind have gone through many incarnations and transcended musical genres. They remain a hugely vital and unique force in British music, influencing everyone from the Sex Pistols to Joy Division and The Orb. Previous illustrious winners include: the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Steve Earle, Jesus And The Mary Chain, Echo And The Bunnymen, The Fall’s Mark E Smith and the Manic Street Preachers.
Phil Alexander, MOJO Magazine’s Editor-in-chief, commented: “As the list of previous winners ably proves, The MOJO Maverick award is reserved for those that have cut across genres, shattered taboos, and that have made music on their own terms. In their rich, eventful and illustrious career Hawkwind have done all these things and quite a lot more. Despite the fact that they have rarely flirted with the mainstream, their music and their attitude has inspired so many different areas of modern music, it’s incredible. From psychedelia to punk to stoner rock, from free festival culture and on to the rave and trance scenes, you can hear and feel their influence everywhere. In fact Hawkwind are more than just a band, they’re a mindset, a way of life. Four decades on they continue to be one of the most vibrant and uncompromising bands in Britain. Long may they remain ‘out there’!.”
