Gorillaz - Superfast Jellyfish
Album Review

Gorillaz – Superfast Jellyfish

We’ve waited a long time for this, and in true Gorillaz style we have received what was owed to us, and then some. “Superfast Jellyfish” is really excellent. Witty, cynical, tuneful and ever-so-British, Gorillaz have done it again.

Whilst it makes clever use of electronic music, it’s not the sort of electronic that will get this track played in clubs, or even particularly on the radio (aside from as a novelty number, perhaps?) which leaves me wondering if “Superfast Jellyfish” isn’t just a bit too clever for its own good. That is not to say that it needs dumbing down, just that in producing a song which is so quirky and unavoidably honest, Gorillaz have set themselves on the overgrown, unmaintained dust trail which runs parallel to the mainstream motorway of modern music.

In a world where everything is either ‘super fast’ or super-sized, this clever little musical commentary takes a step back and has a good chuckle at the headless-chicken society it is aimed at whilst providing a pretty darn good tune to bop along to.
