Following on from the critical success of their SxSW jaunt and off the back of the recent performance on David Letterman, Philly five-piece FREE ENERGY are set to release their debut album ‘STUCK ON NOTHING’ through Virgin UK on MAY 10th.
Released through DFA in the states and produced by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy, the sound of the album takes its cues from the feelgood FM rock of the 70s and 80s. The Cars, Tom Petty, Thin Lizzy, The Steve Miller Band –FREE ENERGY wear their references on their sleeve to great aplomb.
Although, more well-known for his cutting edge electronica, James Murphy said, “I loved making that record. It was so good to record guitars again. I kind of forgot that I used to be really good at that — recording guitars.”
The first single to be taken from the album is the eponymously-titled ‘Free Energy’ – this self-styled theme tune will be available digitally on June 21st. Combining snippets of glam, power pop and arena rock, other stand -out tracks and live favourites include ‘Bang Pop’, ‘Bad Stuff’ and ‘Dream City’.
“With Free Energy, the first thing we do is make sure the drums sound awesome,” explains frontman Paul Sprangers. “Then we build on top of that, so everything is solid, well thought out, and distilled to its essence. There’s a lot of optimism and positivity in the music, lyrics and imagery,”
