Morcheeba - Even Though
Album Review

Morcheeba – Even Though

I’m always wary of referring to music as ‘ethereal’ – it’s almost as though any song with airy female vocals is by default elevated to the status of ‘Godlike’, but Morcheeba’s “Even Though” truly is a song of the gods, both musically and lyrically. It tells the tragic tale of an astronaut floating above the earth, looking down on its vast expanse and, so touched by its simple beauty, with his dying thought wonders why we all can’t just get along.

The Godfrey Brothers who wrote the lyrics are geniuses of poetry, with each line a gem in itself. Jewels such as “slowly follow shining stars through the solar flare” float gracefully through your ears, featherlight on the voice of Skye Edwards who brings such simple, effortless beauty to the lyrics.

What really makes this song stand out, though, is its sense of wholeness. The carefully crafted accompaniment seamlessly combines the acoustic with the electronic with the human voice; it sounds so purposeful, whilst managing to keep the laid back feel which fans of Morcheeba have longsince expected from this eternally spot-on band.
