Thusfar 2010 has seen a depressing series of Rock 'n' Roll fatalities… and it's only June!… Here's a few we lost, and why we should never forget…
Stuart Cable
The former Stereophonics drummer was found dead in his home on Monday 7th June 2010. So far police have confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death (although the rumour mill has been going round already perhaps confirming that the star may have choked on his vomit in his sleep)… Famed for being a BIG personality, his character carried on shining through as he stepped into broadcast after being sacked from the 'phonic's in 2003, appearing on BBC Wales, BBC Radio Wales, Kerrang! 105.2 and Xfm South Wales, and not forgetting his new band 'Killing for company' who were due to appear at this weekend's Download festival.
Paul Gray
The founding member of Slipknot was found dead in his hotel room in Iowa last month. The bass player (AKA #2 /the 'Pig') was one of only 3 original members left in the 9 piece band, famed for their shocking masks and astounding commercial success. Gray also played bass for a number of other bands including Unida on a 2003 tour and took part in the Roadrunner United project in 2005.
Ronnie James Dio
The post Ozzy Black Sabbath front man and former singer of Rainbow lost his fight with stomach cancer in may of this year. This was announced on the rock legend's website by devoted wife Wendy Dio, who said: “Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45am 16 May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private goodbyes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us … Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever”
Devon Clifford
In April 2010, the drummer in You Say Party! We Say Die! collapsed onstage during a show in Vancouver after a suspected brain hemorrhage at just 30 years old! The bands vocalist Becky Ninkovic started screaming for members of the audience to call 911, and after being rushed to hospital, he passed away the following morning. The band's most recent album, 'XXXX' has enjoyed much critical acclaim around the world. This was a man who's fledgling career was cut short far too soon.
Peter SteeleType O Negative and former Carnivore front man Peter Steele passed away in April 2010 after suffering from heart failure. A statement from his family summed up the feelings of his fans and the music world particularly well… “The music world has lost a great talent, and music fans worldwide are mourning, but for our family we are mourning a beloved brother, uncle, cousin, friend and funny man. Peter Steele was a complex man, known for his brooding looks, his self-deprecating sense of humour, unique view of the world, and most of all his loyalty to his fans. His untimely death is tragic – a great loss to us and to music'”.
Malcolm McLaren
The former infamous manager of the Sex Pistols died of Cancer at the age of 64 in April 2010. John Lydon, former singer of the sex pistols paid tribute “For me Malc was always entertaining and I hope you remember that. Above all else he was an entertainer. I will miss him and so should you”… he was famously involved in a dispute with the band regarding mismanagement and the withholding of funds! Despite this, McClaren will always be remembered as one of the greatest rock managers of all time.
Rest in Peace all!…
