It is, in theory, summer although looking out of my window to another grey Glasgow day it doesn’t feel too much like it at the moment. But I’m sure it will get better …
There have been many great summer songs written over the years. The tales of beaches and sun, stories of holiday romances and open top convertibles. The images of girls in bikinis and boys in trunks with bronzed bodies, or of cruising on an open highway wearing shades.
And that got me to thinking: what is the ultimate classic summer time song? The one that you hear on the coldest of days and it transports you to somewhere warm and sunny, or reminds you of that great time you once had.
Is it Summer In The City by the Lovin’ Spoonful? California Girls by the Beach Boys? Or perhaps Dancing In The Streets by Martha and the Vandellas?
Sunny Afternoon by the Kinks is another possibility as is Under the Boardwalk by The Drifters.
Or how about something more modern – Walking on Sunshine by Katrina & the Waves perhaps? Don Henley’s Boys of Summer? Or Bryan Adams’ Summer of ‘69?
Everyone must have their favourite summer song. What’s yours?
