Dave Berry shares with Glasswerk.co.uk his top tips to make your festival fab!
• Talk to strangers: Probably the only time in your life where this will improve your day. You never know where a random conversation will take you at a festival , could be VIP, could be an all night sing along, could be waking up next to a cow, could be all three!
• Wrap up: Boring but true, there’s nothing worse than being freezing cold with nothing but another vintage football shirt to keep your love handles from freezing.
• Make the most of it: I know people go to festivals for reasons other than music but if you’re not going to see any music I know a decent park you can sleep in for free! Seeing truly great performances by iconic bands is what makes British festivals so amazing so make sure you don’t miss out by hanging round in one place all night.
• Get there early: Might seem a bit boring but the last thing you want is having to camp next to the portaloo because you just had to stop for a coffee on the M1.
• Invest in a quality tent: Just like in Field of Dreams, ‘build it and they will come.’ People will automatically congregate around the best tent at a festival so if you happen to be rocking the pimped out Gazebo you’ll never be friend shy over the weekend.
• Keep it clean: I’m not talking shower gel in a cold puddle, but baby wipes and a toothbrush will go a long way should you bump into a festival goer who takes your fancy.
• Embrace festival Karma: What’s a tin of beans in exchange for the karmic purity that comes with helping a fellow reveller in their time of need?
• Say “Yes”: It worked for Danny Wallace and it can work for you too. You never know when something amazing is going to happen at a festival and new experiences only come only come along by saying yes.
• See bands you’ve never heard of: In this age of downloadable festival line ups the magic of stumbling across a totally random but wonderful act can seem a little old fashioned. Go out of your way to explore the extraordinary and you’ll never be disappointed. I discovered Vampire Weekend and Friendly Fires by seeing them randomly on a tiny stage at Glastonbury.
• Stay up, stay out and stay involved: You’re only there for a couple of days, however tired you’re feeling it’s nothing compared to the loser you’ll feel like when your mates are telling you how , while you were in bed, David Bowie bought them a chick-pea wrap.
