The readers of the world’s biggest rock weekly Kerrang! Magazine have spoken for the 17th time and the nominations for The Relentless Energy Drink Kerrang! Awards 2010, which takes place Thursday 29 July, have today been unveiled.
The Relentless Energy Drink Kerrang! Awards 2010 are a firm favourite with the biggest rock stars in the world, all who annually descend on London town to celebrate the great and the good in rock music. Anyone who’s anyone in the industry is there on the night, with a Kerrang! Award widely regarded as the ‘rock’ equivalent of a BRIT or a Grammy Award, and a true indicator of success. Expect the unexpected!
This year’s Relentless Energy Drink Kerrang! Awards 2010 nominations sees American rock acts firmly pitted against the Brits this year, with the multi-million selling 30 Seconds To Mars and the Grammy nominated Tennessee act Paramore enthusiastically bubbling away with an incredible FOUR nominations each.
Not to be outdone, Brit favourites Bullet For My Valentine and You Me At Six both sparkle with THREE nominations apiece. These four major acts will go head to head (along with Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro) in the hotly contested category for Best Album, which last year was won by Metallica for ‘Death Magnetic’.
30 Seconds To Mars, Paramore and Bullet For My Valentine will continue to battle it out for the trophy for Best Live Band, along with Green Day and Skindred, with the Americans then fighting it out for Best Video and Best International Band. Bullet For My Valentine will be taking on You Me At Six for the third year running for Best British Band presented by Fender – but will it be You Me At Six’s year to take the title away? You Me At Six are also nominated for Best Single presented by Red Stripe, against Avenged Sevenfold, The Blackout, Four Year Strong, and Slipknot.
Other multiple nominations go to Biffy Clyro, for Best Video and Best Album, Avenged Sevenfold, for Best Single (presented by Red Stripe) and Best International Band, Green Day (for Best International Band and Best Live Band) and Lostprophets, for Best Video and Best British Band (presented by Fender).
The Best British and Best International Newcomer categories, which celebrate up and coming emerging artists from both the UK and overseas, pave the way for the next big thing in rock music and both categories fizz with exciting nominees this year. Up for Best British Newcomer are Norfolk post-hardcore act Deaf Havana, indie-rockers General Fiasco, Slam Dunk Record signings Out Of Sight, five piece metal band Rise To Remain, fronted by Bruce Dickinson’s son, and the Converge-influenced Throats. The nominations for Best International Newcomer sees Roadrunner newbies Dommin, Tennessee five piece Framing Hanley, infectious rockers Halestorm, Michigan punk rockers The Swellers and Cali-hardcore heroes Trash Talk all up for the title.
Other non-voted for awards will be presented on the night including the No Half Measures Award presented by Relentless Energy Drink, The Kerrang! Icon presented by Orange Amplification and The Kerrang! Inspiration Award presented by HMV. This year’s Awards will be hosted by Corey Taylor from Slipknot/Stone Sour and Scott Ian from Anthrax/The Damned Things.
Nichola Browne, Kerrang! Editor says, “The competition is now getting tough! U.S. superstars Paramore, Green Day, Metallica, and 30 Seconds To Mars are going head to head with the biggest and best homegrown talent, namely Lostprophets, Bullet For My Valentine, You Me At Six and Biffy Clyro. But, as always, the Kerrang! readers hold the power when it comes to deciding who will walk away with one of our coveted K! trophies on July 29th. The night before will prove to be a sleepless night for some of the biggest rock bands in the world!”
On hearing about 30 Seconds to Mars’ four nominations, front man Jared Leto commented, “Wow! Very grateful to be included. Thank you so much to every single one of you for the relentless and tireless voting! This is the doing of the ECHELON. It’s no secret that we have a very special relationship with a wonderful family of vagabonds travelling the world with us. This slightly dysfunctional and always inspiring motley crew of travellers is quite unlike anything I could appropriately describe, but we are so proud to share this epic adventure with them. They are our family. Without them, there would be no MARS.”
Paramore’s Hayley Williams added, “We're so stoked our fans voted for us in all these categories. I'm especially excited to be nominated for “Best Live Band”. That means the world! We really appreciate the nominations and we can't wait to come back to the UK this Winter and properly thank them”.
On hosting the The Relentless Energy Drink Kerrang! Awards 2010, Scott Ian said, ‘I am really excited, actually super excited (“super excited” is 4x as excited as “really excited”) to be back again for for my 4th year hosting the Kerrang! Awards. And like last year I get to share the good time with my stylish friend Corey Taylor. Next to my birthday, it's the biggest party of the year!! See you there!’
Corey Taylor added, ‘I look forward to doin' it up with Scott again this year. Last year was a total blast. If you guys are lucky, I MIGHT wear something revealing this year…”
