Be careful – organised gangs of mobile phone thieves are now targeting gigs and festivals.
The number of reported cases of “multiple thefts” of mobile phones at UK gigs has more than tripled since 2006, according to new figures. In 2009 there were 181 reports compared to just 53 in 2006. Thieves had been arrested with up to 20 phones in their possession.
There is now a black market in top of the range phones as legitimate retailers are unable to keep up with our demands for the very latest model. And some of those handsets stolen will even end up in Eastern Europe or Africa.
There were 22 reported victims at Pendulum's London Wembley Arena gig in May 2010. And other major gigs have also been targeted by gangs who ensure that they are appropriately dressed to move unnoticed amongst the crowds.
So if you are going to a festival over the summer, or to a gig at your favourite venue, take good care of your phone!
