Scissor Sisters – Night Work

Flamboyant, kooky and pleasurable are three words of many possibilities that could describe the Scissor Sisters. The team of disco bopping, sexy, fun time four are back with new album ‘Night Work’.

After taking a few years off and remaining silent in the woodwork, they’ve burst back and produced a new twist on their latest compilation. Still with their D-I-S-C-O/G-A-Y charm this latest offering has a 1980’s electro sound added, hinting of similarities to that of the Pet Shop Boys, Modern Talking & Soft Cell. It can be really heard in ‘A Whole New Way’, but not just this, there is plenty of disco 70’s funk in these tracks too. A perfect example where you can imagine that glittery ball rotating before your eyes is, ‘Any Which Way’. Sounding a touch like something from Funky Town.

Lead single off this album ‘Fire with Fire’ in my personal opinion isn’t perhaps the best song to throw into the musical mixing bowl after some time out. With its pianistic opening and ballad sounds, it points in the direction of something from a musical rather than a chart topping bands album. Even though it’s good in its own right, it’s not a fab example of what the rest of the album contains. Although the lyrics are clearly closer to home for these guys, on first listen it doesn’t quite live up to ‘Take Your Mama Out’ or ‘I Don’t Feel Like Dancing’. Which to be honest is tough task anyway.

But, who wants to every album to sound the same?

Perhaps this is the main reason they’ve decided to use the help of Stuart Price, who’s worked on Kylie’s latest and is responsible for Madonna’s album, “Confession On The Dancefloor”. Both of these albums are full of electro pop and funk so it’s no surprise this is a fantastic collaboration for the Scissor Sisters. This album seems to have taken the best ingredients of electro disco pop and added some of the best influences from the past decades. This all teamed with sexual diva Ana Matronic and glitzy Jake Shears it’s a fine recipe to being a success. Throw in spandex, sequins and some neon lights and it sounds like the perfect Saturday night out.
