Now that Silver Columns’ wacked out, off-kilter alternate dimension of electro pop has been unveiled in all its unconventional glory with their debut LP “YES, AND DANCE”, and punters have also been able to witness the duo of the Pictish Trail and Adem take their electrifying road show to festivals all across the UK this summer (indeed, the list practically reads like a rollcall of every festival worth its salt, including Glastonbury, Lovebox, Camden Crawl and T In the Park among others, with V Festival, Bestival, Standon Calling, Loopallu and a headline slot at Green Man still to come), it is undoubtedly time for Silver Columns to take their rightful place in the offbeat pop hierarchy.
“Always On” is but another missive that will establish Silver Columns as one of the most exciting and deliciously unusual new bands to come along in a good long while. And, in keeping with the duo’s contrary nature, it sounds nothing like the other singles they have released to date – their debut “Brow Beaten” was an uninhibited dancefloor banger, while “Yes, and Dance” (Silver Columns remix) was eerie, ethereal and strangely propulsive, and “Cavalier”, their first proper single, was a four to the floor rug cutter punctuated with call and response vocals. “Always On” is a pop song alright – and an instantly addictive one at that – but it is also shot through with enough of the pair’s trademark whimsy and idiosyncrasy (cascading vocals, shimmering beats, Euro-pop basslines paired with dreamy, floaty vocals) to make you fall head over heels in love as well.
Equally exciting is the fact that the single comes backed with a gloriously sprawling, thrillingly dense 9-minute remix of “Always On” by Caribou, who is being rightly feted at the moment for his own opus “Swim”. Caribou take Silver Columns’ perfectly formed gem of a song and turn it inside out into an epic psych-pop odyssey, unearthing hitherto unexplored corners and crevices in the original and bringing shiny new surfaces to light, perfect for sticky summer nights and the mornings after.
