Described as 'Icelandic sounding Beach Boys', The Robot Heart bring together multi-harmony singing, acoustic guitars, piano, clattering drums, electronica and assorted gadgetry. The band cut their teeth hosting club nights in Brighton’s thriving indie/folk scene and have supported Gomez, Tunng Athlete and Ed Harcourt.
The Robot Heart are: Tom Marsh, Astra Forward, Rob Dingle and Daniel Ladd. The band were assembled by Tom Marsh to bring life to the songs he’d been writing. He explains how The Robot Heart came to be:
“This music is the result of finding a way through grieving the deaths of several of my friends, drug/alcohol abuse, arrests, having my heart broken and feeling close to various forms of mental illness. My nightmares bled into reality and a dark cloud formed over my home town with ghosts and spirits around me. During this time I found myself visualizing and even sketching robot hearts, a kind of motor-powered generator that would carry me through. There could never have been another name for this band. I escaped and traveled and played in bands in Jerusalem, Copenhagen, Dublin and London, before finally settling in Brighton where I found a small family of musicians: Astra Forward who blew me away when I heard her singing a haunted melody a cappella at an open-mic night in a church; Bob Dingle whose voice I first heard through the plumbing of a student house, while he sang a Sparklehorse song somewhere in the building; And Daniel Ladd who auditioned for us after he bootlegged our early gigs as a folk trio on his phone, and who finally planted the perfect heartbeat behind the music.”
The Robot Heart have just finished their debut album with Rik Simpson (The Cure, Portishead, Coldplay). Their first release is titled Dust and is a mini-album comprising of 3 Rik Simpson produced songs and 3 acoustic songs and released on July 19th on Bleeding Heart Recordings.
Bleeding Heart Recordings is a Brighton based record label, founded in November 2009. The Bleeding Hearts Club was an infamous live music night at the Prince Albert in Brighton. Founder Chris Davies, brings the bands he loves & works closely with to the attention of a wider audience. For 7 years Chris built a roster of bands based on their musical style which generally meant: downbeat with folk influences.
The transformation from live music promotion to record label came about when Tom from The Robot Heart handed Chris a recording they'd just finished. This will be the debut of both label and band. Released this Summer, Dust is a 6 song mini-album to be released on CD and 10” vinyl.
The Label is being funded and distributed by Mark Mcquillan at Republic of Music (Wichita, Moshi Moshi, City Slang and Fleet Foxes). Mark has worked on major campaigns for Bloc Party, Fatboy Slim, Paul Weller, Stereophonics, Elbow, Muse, Belle & Sebastian, Super Furry Animals, Chicane, Mercury Rev, Suede, Lambchop & Oasis.
