The Brits led the charge at tonight's Relentless Energy Drink Kerrang! Awards, which saw Bullet For My Valentine, Biffy Clyro and You Me At Six all voted winners, beating off competition from their American rivals.
Kerrang! Magazine¹s 17th annual Awards ceremony in London was hosted for the second year running by Slipknot / Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor and Scott Ian from Anthrax / The Damned Things.
Over 6 million Kerrang! Magazine and Kerrang.com readers voted across the public categories in the last three weeks, fiercely placing their support behind their favourite rock acts in order to make them winners on the night.
Hot on the heels of their hugely successful album Fever, which went Top 5 in the UK, Australia, Austria, Germany, Canada and Japan, Bridgend boys Bullet For My Valentine picked up the award for the third year running for Best British Band presented by Fender, and beat off stiff competition from mostly U.S. acts – Green Day, 30 Seconds To Mars, Paramore and also fellow Brits Skindred to win Best Live Band, following a superb headlining appearance at this year¹s Download Festival.
Scottish favourites Biffy Clyro were well deserved of the title for Best Video presented by Young Minds (beating U.S. rockers 30 Seconds To Mars, Paramore and Cancer Bats) for track ŒThe Captain¹, which sees the band captured on a boat out on the high seas, and accepted their trophy in person. Surrey¹s You Me At Six were voted as winner for Best Single presented by Red Stripe, for ŒLiquid Confidence¹ unable to be there on the night as they are currently in the States on Warped Tour, the band sent in a video message to accept their award, thanking management, label, everyone at Kerrang!, and Œmost importantly¹ the fans, Œfourth time lucky to get this award!¹.
30 Seconds To Mars and Paramore, each nominated four times in the same categories, were locked in a fierce battle during voting, and were placed neck and neck up until the very last minute. In the end, 30 Seconds To Mars fronted by Jared Leto pipped Paramore to the post for Best International Band, however Paramore exacted their revenge by taking away the trophy for Best Album. Paramore, unable to be there on the night, sent in an acceptance message for their award, which honoured their third album Brand New Eyes, Œthank you guys so so much for voting, and voting, and voting for usŠthis is crazyŠBest AlbumŠthat¹s the ONEŠwish we could be there to kiss all of you in the face!²
This album was certified Gold in the U.S. this January after reaching No. 1 in 7 international album charts including the UK upon release last year.
Frontwoman Hayley Williams has also recently enjoyed another No. 1 as guest vocalist on U.S. rapper B.o.B¹s single Airplanes.
30 Seconds To Mars, ensconced in Australia on tour, also sent in a video message to thank Kerrang! for their award… ŒThank you to everybody out there, this is amazing! What a wonderful thing to give – Best International Band. Thanks so much to everybody who voted, this is so much about you guys and probably less about us. And to all the other bands that we were nominated with, we are happy to be in your company. Thank you, thank you, thank you Kerrang!, we are very grateful and surprised. Sorry we couldn¹t be there!¹
Proving that being a rock star is more than ripped jeans it can be genes as well the London-based metallers Rise To Remain were crowned winners of Best British Newcomer. Fronted by Bruce Dickinson¹s son Austin, the band have received acclaim in the UK rock press and are working on their debut album. Best International Newcomer went to new Californian hardcore heroes Trash Talk, who are already making an explosive name for themselves in the UK on the back of some recent infamous live shows.
In addition to the eight public voted categories, a further six Œspecial¹ Kerrang! awards were presented on the night. Honouring LA¹s most famous and notorious sons, Mötley Crüe were awarded with Kerrang! Hall Of Fame trophy, following in the footsteps of legends such as Black Sabbath, Bon Jovi, AC/DC, Judas Priest and Slayer. Renowned for their hell raising as well as Sunset Strip-soaked anthems such as ŒGirls Girls Girls¹, ŒKickstart My Heart¹ and ŒDr Feelgood¹, Mötley Crüe are the ultimate rock stars 100% sex, drugs and rock Œn¹ roll.
In tribute to the loss of two hugely influential artists, two posthumous awards were given out. The Kerrang! Icon presented by Orange Amplification went to Ronnie James Dio, who sadly passed away in May. Accepting this award on his behalf was his widow Wendy. Dio was a true rock icon, performing in Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and up until his death, Heaven & Hell. Credited with popularising the Œdevil horns¹ salute, his influence and mark on heavy rock and metal is unbeatable.
Honoured with the Kerrang! Services to Metal was Paul Gray, the bassist and songwriter of U.S. metallers Slipknot, who also passed away in May.
British musicians and artists still played a strong hand in the special awards, categories. Lostprophets were honoured with Classic Songwriter, an award that in previous years has gone to Linkin Park, Def Leppard, Deftones, Placebo and Nine Inch Nails. With five Kerrang! awards under their belts since 2001, Lostprophets have steadily built a huge following, with arena tours and headlining festival appearances to boot. With six UK Top 20 singles including ŒBurn Burn¹, ŒLast Train Home¹, ŒRooftops¹ and ŒIts Not The End Of The World But I Can See It From Here¹, and three UK Top Ten albums (2004¹s Start Something, 2006¹s No. 1 album Liberation Transmission and 2010¹s The Betrayed), Lostprophet¹s music has penetrated our charts and endeared themselves to a generation of young rock music fans who continue to love and support this still fresh and exciting rock act.
Punk poet Frank Turner collected the No Half Measures Award presented by Relentless Energy Drink for his spirit of independence and his notable music career, which saw punk legend Brett Gurewitz sign him to his Epitaph label.
Fusing folk songwriting with punk melodies, this recent Kerrang! cover star supported Green Day at their London and Manchester stadium shows this year.
German industrial metallers Rammstein were presented with the Kerrang!
Inspiration Award presented by HMV their global success coupled with stunning live artistry and performance has put them ahead of their competitors and they remain a truly original act. Encouraging controversy all throughout their career, from dubious music videos, to their latest album packaging for album ŒLiebe Ist Für Alle Da¹ containing handcuffs and dildos, the band have truly captured the imagination of a whole generation of metal heads who continue in their droves to see their spectacular live sets.
Presenters on the night included Feeder, Madina Lake, The King Blues, Daniel P Carter, Sarah Cawood, Brendon Burn, Andrew O¹Neill, Brian Posehn, Tim Minchin.
500 guests were in attendance on the night, with a Cardinal Sins themed drinks reception greeting all guests upon arrival, with characters and sets provided by Torture Garden.
The official Aftershow took place at the Relentless Garage in London with guest DJs Zac Slack and James Sherry, AKA the Crossfire Sound System
Editor of Kerrang! Magazine Nichola Browne commented, ³Despite the very tough competition, once again, Kerrang! readers have proved themselves to have the finest taste when it comes to honouring the bands that are shaking up the rock world, and it¹s brilliant to see that our British rock and metal scene is so highly regarded and supported. As well as celebrating the very best of British and international talent, we are really pleased that we could pay our respects to Ronnie James Dio and Paul Gray tonight with two very special awards.²
