Programming has already started for The Secret Garden Party 2011, with plans to push the creative, scholarly, theatrical and musical boundaries of the critically acclaimed July event even further.
This year Gardeners discovered a people-powered distillery, ex-MI5 informants participating in debate, explorers and scientists, snakes and sexuality, for the duration, revelling in the Fact or Fiction theme. It also saw dance mega-force Gorillaz Sound System take to the stage while an art installation-cum-dancefloor exploded and smouldered in the centre of the lake, in a spectacular burning of the Blimp, complete with firework display. It was a stunning climax to the most successful SGP to date.
Ian Goldin, former VP of the World Bank, economics adviser to President Nelson Mandela, and current Director of Oxford's 21st Century School was also on site participating in discussion, while Marcus Du Sautoy, Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science, talked about his BBC Horizon documentary on consciousness, among other very awesome things.
Musically, the Garden provided an almighty soundtrack to the weekend, including performances by Marina and the Diamonds, Eliza Doolittle, Darwin Deez, Lissie, Summer Camp, Mercury Rev, Caravan Palace, Fionn Regan, Fenech Soler, Example, and secret shows from Gaggle, Joss Stone and Mystery Jets. The Garden also grew this year, introducing a new field to accommodate more Gardeners, and allow the event to work with more projects and performers, including Strummerville and the new Crossroads stage.
The Secret Garden Party thrives, in every aspect of its production, to be as grand as possible, while also maintaining the attention to detail that it’s known for, and incorporating all the new ideas they’d like to work with. Dispelling rumours however, The Head Gardeners have stated that the 2011 event will not be any bigger in capacity, and retain the size and atmosphere of this year’s Secret Garden Party.
The Head Gardeners, and all at The Secret Garden Party, send a big thank you to those who attended and supported the event this year, including all Gardeners, performers, artists, staff and volunteers. The success of the event was due to the creativity of those Gardeners who excelled this year in their enthusiasm for the Fact of Fiction theme.
