Club AC30 are bringing the third instalment of their acclaimed mini-festival Reverence back to London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts, for three very special nights from 17-19 September. It follows the success of Reverence 2 at the ICA last November, which featured Ulrich Schnauss, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Swervedriver and Chapterhouse among its illustrious and eclectic line-up.
Not an easy bill to better, but Club AC30 have upped the ante again with the announcement of an impressive roster of artists. Friday night’s headliner slot will be Oslo’s Serena Maneesh, supported by Tripwires and the soundscapes of Exit Calm, whose eponymous 2010 album was fittingly produced by Ulrich Schnauss.
Saturday’s line-up commences with the lo-fi charm of Slowgun, who have a deft way with shimmering pop hooks and deadpan vocals, reminiscent of Nico at her androgynous best. Following them are The Blanche Hudson Weekend, and the reformed 80s jangle-pop champs The Primitives. Born out of the same mid-eighties guitar scene which spawned My Bloody Valentine, and given the Morrissey seal of approval, The Primitives still have their chops, so expect the incredible live form which has seen them tour all over the UK this year.
Daniel Land and The Modern Painters open Sunday’s event, followed by the multi-layered textures and soaring gentleness of Heligoland. The pinnacle of Reverence though will a one-off set by former Cocteau Twins’ guitarist Robin Guthrie. The legendary Scotsman has done anything but rest on his laurels since the disbanding of the Twins, and has maintained a prolific output ranging from solo albums, repeat collaborations and even film soundtracks. The brilliance of his set can only be amplified by its rarity, and is sure to be a matchless sign-off for a reverence weekender that is utterly unmissable. For this set, he will be joined onstage by two members of Heligoland.
