After a summer of touring and festivals, playing to places as far, wide and outlandish as Norway, Latvia and Cardiff, The Miserable Rich return to their native shores to bring their brand of chamber music for indie pop lovers the length and breadth of the country.
On the back of their critically acclaimed albums – debut 'Twelve Ways to Count' (” …so heartbreakingly beautiful, it reduces anyone who hears it to a weeping mess.” NME, 'pop music that could soundtrack a nursery rhyme created by Tim Burton' Bearded) and this year's deeper sonic richness of 'Of Flight And Fury' ('as if they've captured the sun and learned how to play it' Outline) – the tour coincides with the heartbreaking and humourous 'Let Me Fade' single, released on Humble Soul to coincide with the tour – and with a video by animator Ruth Barrett that really needs to be seen to be believed, depicting the dark tale of the breakup of Mr and Mrs Squirrel.
The band will be showcasing songs from both albums and 2009's 'Covers' ep, as well as newer material in an ever-evolving set.
With sessions for Radio 2's Mark Lamarr, Radio 4's Loose Ends and several with 6Music's Marc Riley, and a consistent rota of touring the UK, Europe and beyond, this is a band who thrive on getting out there and playing – the live experience is the real heartbeat of The Miserable Rich…
Singer James de Malplaquet contemplates the upcoming dates on the tour…
Sep 28th – Duke's Corner, Dundee
“We've never been to Dundee as a band, and we're always excited to go somewhere new. I went there on a holiday with my parents touring Scotland at age ten, but all I remember – is the Tay bridge. I was a bit smaller then, but I reckon it will still look pretty impressive. The band will of course be hoping to engage with some Dundee cake – and we'll all be glad to be back in Scotland for the first time in a couple of years. A good crowd and some good drinking North of the border.”
Sep 29th – The Ceilidh Place, Ullapool
“The glamourous Highlands… Some of the most beautiful places on our sceptred Isle. I remember coming up this way to work at a hunting lodge with some friends when I was 16. They, the friends, poked fun relentlessly at my vegetarianism with such fine angus steak around us. I got revenge on them by throwing a steak covered in blue and green food die into the shower with them as they tried to recover from a marathon whisky tasting session. Happy days.
As a band, we have a decidedly worrying and uncool habit of punning the names of cities we play in. It keeps the mind, erm, active. Hence, 'It's only rock and roll but I Leipzig' and 'There's Norway I'm going up there'. The mind boggles at what we can do with Ullapool.”
Sep 30th – The Wee Red Bar, Edinburgh
“One of the most haunted places in Britain – as indeed is our hometown, Brighton. Maybe it's because of all the comedians that have died there. Ho ho.
We'll be looking to collect material for our next album from the stories of the city…
From what I can remember from my Scottish tour at ten, a beautiful city it is too – and with a thriving nightlife. Hope we won't have too long a drive the day after so we can really make the most of our time there…”
Oct 2nd – Westgarth Social Club, Middlesbrough
“Back to the Westgarth – we played here with Woodpigeon on our first album tour and have been looking forward to seeing the warm and enthusiastic crown again. Good to be back in Reeves and Mortimer territory and all.”
Oct 3rd – Stereo, York
“Another new place for the band to visit, and again, somewhere I remember from childhood holidays with my parents, but haven't been to since. I remember the cathedral, but my nephew, who lives there now, tells me there's a lot more to this historic city. He's gonna show us the sights. Sure to be a late night…”
Oct 4th – Ruby Lounge, Manchester
“With our label, Humble Soul and Marc Riley’s BBC 6Music show, Manchester has become a second home to us and we always have a good time there. We've been lucky enough to play some of the best venues in the city, but this is our first show at the Ruby Lounge: we’re all looking forward to it and imagining we'll be wearing velvet smoking jackets among the cocktail dressed and dj toting crowd. We know it'll be a night to remember…”
Oct 5th – The Musician, Leicester
“We're breaking a lot of new ground on this tour, and Leicester is yet another first for us. With famous sons like Gary Lineker, Emile Heskey and, er, Walkers crisps, it should be a typically healthy and sporty stop on the tour – and I believe the Musician pub is just the sort of sporting venue where we can show of our undoubted championship credentials.”
Oct 7th – The Luminaire, London
“Although we've played plenty of shows in London, being part based here, The Luminaire is one place we haven't made it to yet. With such a great reputation, and a resonant name to conjure with, we'll be looking forward to losing our virginity here…”
Oct 8th – Grain Barge, Bristol
“I went to uni in Exeter, and thus know Bristol as it's bigger, cooler brother to go to for bigger parties and venues. I also ran a bar here once at a festival and got told off by Daddy G from Massive Attack for being too noisy in his local after a 48 hour shift. It's a hip town – with a fair few friends of the band here. We’ve never played the Grain Barge either, but it sounds nice – as we hope it will on the night of the 8th.”
Oct 9th – Newhampton Arts Centre, Wolverhampton
“And so it ends in the West Midlands – always a funny and friendly place to play. We'll be hoping for a big friendly crowd for the last date of the UK tour. Come and let's put smiles on each other's faces…”
