Take a long, hard look at the ‘Blue Sky Noise’ album artwork. How would you describe it? Disarming yet intriguing? Fascinating but disquieting? Bold but multidimensional? Now, have a listen, and you’ll discover that the music on the album invokes an identical reaction.
Circa Survive have the most readily-recognisable vocals in rock and effortlessly expert riffs that prevent them ever falling into a rut. Not only is this, their third full-length album, a completely new experience as a whole; each track is a breath of fresh air, completely different from those it is sandwiched between. There’s echoes of emo’s original heroes Saves The Day (‘Frozen Creek’), a healthy dose of drama Chiodos would be proud of (‘Glass Arrows’), and the psychedelic overtones of the Beatles’ Magical Mystery days (Strange Terrain) – all woven into an irrefutably original cavalcade of songs.
It’s been three years in the making, and it’s clear to see these were three years well spent. The polish, the precision and the strangeness that holds your attention for all twelve tracks will win them new fans and reassure their old fans that Anthony Green is far from hanging up the mic.
