Mixmag Launch Greatest DJ Of All Time Poll

Mixmag, the world’s biggest clubbing and dance music magazine, is asking dance music fans around the world to vote in the only DJ poll that matters: The Greatest DJ Of All Time.

Launching on 16 September, everyone who loves dance music and DJ culture is given the chance to make their vote count by visiting link. The site utilises the latest facebook connect technology and features videos, information, discussion and much more.

This is the dance music equivalent of the BBC’s ‘Great Britons’ series. A shortlist of 35 DJs has been put together, and each nominee has been chosen by another huge name from the world of dance music.

The nominees range from across the spectrum and history of dance music and include the likes of:

 Contemporary superstars such as Fatboy Slim, Tiesto, Richie Hawtin, 2ManyDJs, Erol Alkan, Carl Cox, Sven Vath, Paul van Dyk, and Andy C.
 Founding figures of disco like Francis Grasso and David Mancuso
 Original house DJ Larry Levan (championed by Arthur Baker)
 The godfathers of hip hop such as Grandmaster Flash and Kool Herc
 Paul Oakenfold and Sasha, the first of the superstar DJs
 NY warehouse legend Francois K (championed by dubstep pioneer Mala)
 The first person to set up two turntables in a club, Jimmy Saville!

As well as contributions from some of the biggest stars in dance music, respected DJ historians Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton of link have also weighed in with their nominations and expertise.

Each of the ‘champions’ has recorded an exclusive video for Mixmag, urging viewers to vote for their choice of greatest ever DJ.

Mixmag’s sister website, Don’t Stay In (link), the world’s biggest clubbing website, will focus on each nominated DJ over the next few months with free mixes to download, site takeovers, and further video footage.

Voting will be open until midnight on 15th December, with the final result announced in the February 2011 issue of Mixmag.

Mixmag was founded in 1983 as a newsletter for the nascent UK club DJ scene. The first cover stars were Shalamar and the magazine launched the first legal DJ mix tapes. As rave culture exploded in the early 90s, Mixmag became the bible of dance music and clubbing, charting the rise of the superstar DJ and defining the scene as we know it, along the way coining terns such as ‘superclub’ and ‘trip hop’. 27 years later it is accepted as the foremost international authority on dance music and club culture.
