Restruct - Built Back Up From Self Destruction
Album Review

Restruct – Built Back Up From Self Destruction

Metal is one of those genres which seem an utter contradiction. Heavy guitars, bass and drums are just what the ear notices first, but on keener listening there are subtle and emotional lyrics. Restruct fall in to that niche quite easily and seem to wallow in it like a happy hippo in mud.

Hailing from Washington they have been rocking their way through cities and towns across the water and have been sell out showmen and so they must be doing something right. This is their debut album and is one of those which is, completely contradictory their story so far. The best reference point to their sound is Alice in Chains or Faith No More.

The generic sound is a little like the obese music used in trashy video games and teen flick credit music. Yes, it is overly emotional and crass beyond reason. They have been there as the title suggests and it seems to give the music some degree of sincerity, but the music is so self obsessed. Every track is about the same person, constantly referring to “me” or some other first person description lyrics like “don’t fucking judge me” do not add anything other than to the sick bucket.

The tracks are blurred in to each other and artistically speaking it is not a criticism. The idea of them melting together fits the theme and the subjects, like Alcohol as well as Rain and Snow. The music is just relentless and with no let up, you can consider it a good thing.

Nasal whining about the past is never a good idea and it is absolutely fine to have emotional music and life advice tracks. Take Baz Luhrman’s Suncreen track, Sage Francis’ Best of Times, they have the same emotional reference points of suicide and life going on and leaving you behind, but the difference is those artists go out of themselves and are truthful of about their hopes and fears. Just whine with a little more style and taste.
