Listening to ‘Push It Away’, one half of Seerauber Jenny’s double A-side debut single, it’s hard not to think that you’ve discovered a gem. It’s that feeling you got when you heard your favourite band for the first time, you know you are on to something and you aren’t likely to forget this first magical listen.
A fuzz pop dream of a track, it’s like if Sonic Youth decided to go mainstream. Vocalist Fran Barker leads the line with her hauntingly beautiful voice (think a female Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine and you aren’t far off) while Neil Claxton, formerly of Mint Royale, backs her up with some shimmering soundscapes reminiscent of The Cure in their heyday.
Why oh why they decided to pair this mesmerising track with another A-side is a mystery, and as it turns out ‘Waste Of Time’ is not just a title but also a pretty good description of the song itself. Sounding like every acoustic B-side you’ve ever heard, it drearily bobs along for an entirely forgettable four minutes.
But don’t let that put you off buying the single – the brilliant ‘Push It Away’ is the true A-side here and is surely a sign of things to come from Fran and Neil. Highly promising.
