Annie Mac Presents - Koko
Live Review

Annie Mac Presents – Koko, London

Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac came up with the goods, as she presented another sold-out show at Camden Koko. This month, the night started off with hundreds of us braving the rain. Nevertheless, the torrential weather was totally worth it. Doors opened at 9pm and AMP was officially kicked off with, one of London’s rising young talents, DJ Monki. Her set specialised in future garage, a term coined to describe the fusion of dance and funky garage and warmed the crowd up perfectly.

New music came from British synthpop act, Monarchy. These guys echoed influences from the likes of Kraftwerk and The Bravery. Performing in a style that was a little too subdued, their electro-indie was lost on the likes of us. They were followed-by Italian-Belgian DJ duo, Aeroplane. Stephen Fasano and Vito De Luca had the audience in the palm of their hands. Absolutely amazing, from start to finish, they played old and nu-disco and classic electro-house tunes. Before we knew it, Katy B was on stage. Unleashing her three main singles, she belted out ‘Perfect Stranger’ (Magnetic Man collaboration) and ‘Louder’. However, her performance of hit single, ‘Katy On A Mission’ (co-written and produced by Benga), was undoubtedly her best. Vocal delivery was strong, even though you could tell she was excitedly nervous playing to over 1000 fans.

As expected, Annie Mac came on stage to a roaring welcome. She laid down her trademark eclectic mash-up sound to her adoring public. Blasting hits from across the music spectrum. You name it, she mixed it! Indie, electro, dance, d’n’b, dubstep, disco, hip-hop and more..! Here are a couple of stand-out tracks: Fake Blood – ‘I Think I Like It’, Swedish House Mafia – ‘One (Your Name)’, Yeah Yeah Yeahs – ‘Heads Will Roll’ and Tensnake – ‘Coma Cat’. After her ladyship’s set, the headliner, electro-house DJ Fake Blood ended up destroying the night with his epic drops and violent scratching. His sound was heavier and dark. He knew that a lot was expected from him and he did not disappoint. He is definitely not an act to be reckoned with – you’ll end up with (fake) blood on your hands – yes, embarrassing pun-time!

AMP nights rave the hardest. So, next time, join us!
