Initially inspired by an article written by journalist Paul Harris on Detroit’s urban renewal city farms, the video for Above & Beyond and Gareth Emery pres. OceanLab ‘On A Good Day (Metropolis)’ captures the song’s essential meaning of triumph over adversity through the powerful, visual narrative of the Georgia Street Community Collective and their determination to make a better, brighter life for their local community.
Since the collapse of a once thriving automotive industry, Detroit has become known as a monument of urban decay with disused warehouses, derelict wasteland and vacant factories peppering the city. Georgia Street Community Collective are one of many organisations harnessing local action and bringing community volunteers together to create positive results – regenerating wasteland as urban farms and community gardens.
Directed by Steve Glashier who has made videos for Fatboy Slim and Juliette Lewis, the real stars of this video is the Georgia Street Community Collective themselves and the many members of the Detroit community who unite to transform their local surroundings.
As part of their 2011 US tour, Above & Beyond will also be playing a Detroit charity gig to raise money for the Georgia Street Community Collective’s current projects which include building a computer lab and neighbourhood library.
