My Ex-Boyfriends Records Present: Fire Walk With Me - Moustache Bar
Live Review

My Ex-Boyfriends Records Present: Fire Walk With Me – Moustache Bar, London

Diane, it’s 11.30am, February 24th – Entering the town of Twin Peaks. It’s 5 miles south of the Canadian border, 12 miles west of the state line. I’ve never seen so many trees in my life…

I am actually entering the Moustache Bar in Dalston with a cardboard log tied around my neck. Not a conceptual fashion statement as one might expect in these parts but my tribute to the Log Lady which is perhaps the easiest Twin Peaks costume to cobble together at the last minute.

My Ex-Boyfriends Records (MEBR) have picked up on a gem of a theme for their monthly club night pulling out all the stops for David Lynch and Mark Frost’s cult TV show from the early nineties. The all girl DJ team who unite in feminist triumph over their unfortunate exes by hitting them where it hurts: their record collections and remedy our broken hearts by providing a healing mix of Northern Soul, Indie Pop and Rock n Roll. Displaying the best costumes of the evening, the girls all wear immaculate waitress uniforms from Twin Peaks’ Double R Diner and hand out generous platefuls of Norma’s famous cherry pie. How any boy would want to break up with these girls is a mystery.

The dance floor was effectively incubated by Frances best kept vampire secret – John & Jehn on the decks, demonstrating their impeccable taste also stretches to their record collection.

The live performance of the night comes courtesy of Ellen Murphy, otherwise known as ‘The Only Girl’, putting a screeching halt to the lively dance floor with her repertoire of soporific, largely forgettable songs, however she redeems herself with a flawless execution of ‘Falling’ from the Twin Peaks theme.

The MEBR girls then take to the decks, doing what they do best and despite the fact that more than half the crowd appear unaware of what Twin Peaks actually is, a good, if slightly unsettling night is had by all.
