The summer of 2009 saw the longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century; the death of musical legend Michael Jackson and a plethora of synth-led electro-pop acts hurtling across the radio waves.
It also played host to the birth of Leeds located dream pop threesome The Diamond Sea; formed in the basement of a small terraced house, they are now set to release their debut album ‘Second Move’ though burgeoning independent This Is Music. (Boy 8 Bit/Invasion)
Christened after the Sonic Youth track ‘Diamond Sea’ the trio, along with producers Carl Stipetic and Paul Hazlegrove, took to a small studio and several front rooms, to create an album rich in nostalgic guitar sounds and vocal harmonies, set against lyrical topics of travel, literature and 21st century life.
Comprising of front man and lyricist Ben Eyes (Guitar/Vocals), Matthew Robson (Drums) and Lee Hooper (Bass/Vocals), collectively they harbor a varied taste in music. Influences lie with the alt-country sounds of Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon to contemporary composers such as Max Richter and the windswept rock of bands such as Wilco. To render a sound that echoes the emphasis of bands such as Do Make Say Think and Enablers, perfectly executed to favour those with a nostalgic lament for indie music reminiscent of the late eighties, early nineties.
Live, The Diamond Sea deliver a tougher sound, than the intimate tones found on the record. Having earned their live stripes supporting the likes of Sleepy Son (ATP Recordings), filling in for a missing Chrome Hoof and appearing on festival bills such as Rough Beats. They have created a live show that is both dynamic and invoking, and often inclusive of a free from jam in the spirit of, from whom they take their moniker, Sonic Youth.
