Röyksopp and Genero.tv launched a competition today giving film makers the opportunity to make music videos for the band’s new album, Senior. The competition will be open from November 4 until January 17 and includes all 9 tracks from Senior, with entrants given the freedom to make music videos for any of them.
27 finalists will be selected based on community votes, Röyksopp and Genero.tv judging. A total of 9 winners will be selected by Röyksopp, one for each track, including an overall winner. Prize money totals US$11,000 – the overall winner will receive US$3,000, while the remaining 8 winners will get US$1,000 each. A selection of the winning videos will also be featured as part of a special Röyksopp BUG event (London’s premiere music video event) at the BFI Southbank in London. Röyksopp will also be DJing after the music video showcase.
Senior, released on September 13, is the counterpart to last year's critically acclaimed 'Junior' album. More introspective and freeform than its poppier partner and fully instrumental, 'Senior' was written as a complete set of tracks, each designated to take a specific part in the bigger piece. All individual tracks have been made with the intent of coexisting with the other tracks on the album.
Röyksopp explain: “The two albums ('Junior' and 'Senior') have a kinship, in that they represent Röyksopp's two very different artistic expressions. 'Junior' – with emphasis on vocals, accessible melodies and harmonies, has the energy, the inquisitive temper and confident “hey-ho, let's go!”-attitude of youth, whereas 'Senior' is the introverted, dwelling and sometimes graceful counterpart – brimfull with dark secrets and distorted memories, insisting “I'm old, I've got experince…”. Senior' is furthermore an album about age, horses and being subdued – with devils breathing down your neck.”
Genero.tv Director and Founder Mick Entwisle explains the competition further; “We’re huge Röyksopp fans so we’re over the moon to be working with them. We all agreed that because of the focus on the album as a whole it made sense to run the competition for all 9 tracks. It’s a fantastic album and it’s almost made for something like this – it’s got a real cinematic sound so there is huge scope for creativity in the videos. We can’t wait to see what people come up with”.
“We think film makers will be as excited about this as we are”, continues Entwisle. “It’s not every day you get a chance to make a music video for an international artist like Röyksopp, let alone being able to choose the track you want to make it for.”
Röyksopp is the latest artist to partner with Genero.tv, who have previously run music video competitions with Alicia Keys, Moby, Band of Skulls, The Temper Trap, Booka Shade and UNKLE amongst others. Genero.tv seeks to revolutionise the way artists connect and engage with their fans by allowing the global creative community to make and upload their own music videos for the world to watch, vote on and spread virally.
