More Than Conquerors – More Than Conquerors

November 15th sees the release of the eagerly anticipated new EP from More Than Conquerors. The self titled EP contains five tracks full of energy and quirky hooks. On the first few listens it’s difficult to pigeonhole More Than Conquerors into a genre. Opening track I’ve Done Nothing/I’ve Done It All features a stop-start rhythm and certainly has post hardcore leanings. The same can be said about Go On, Go On, Get Out. Having said this More Than Conquerors are certainly not all style over substance, both these songs showcase a real ear for a pop melody. Then (just as we think we’ve got them sussed out) midway through the EP comes Crooked Old World – one minute and fifteen seconds of hand claps, banjo and folkie backing vocals that really shows this band can offer up their fair share of surprises. Step to the Sea/Take the Boat and Home Is A Red Dress bring the EP to a close in a fitting manner, two perfectly crafted, guitar pop anthems. The latter incorporating an unusual mix of the afore mentioned banjo and a monster guitar riff.
An impressive offering then, usually with a band so early into its career we’re saying things like ‘shows potential’ or ‘given time they can become…’ But that’s not the case here. Everything is in place already, there’s enough sophisticated structure, melody and groove to last a full album. So what are you waiting for, get on it lads!
