On the press release it says that therapy waited for the right time to release an official Live album. And it seemed that the 20th anniversary was the right time. What is amazing is the amount of content we have been given.
Recorded over 3 nights at the London Water Rats Theatre they have compiled a 2 disc set with a total of 36 tracks! Yes 36 tracks – spanning all of their releases. There are of course the fan favourites as well as a few extra little nuggets.
Glasswerk recently got to see a celebratory gig that saw the band performing the entire Troublegum album along with a few other favourites. It’s nice to follow such a successful show up with a recorded experience from another show to see if the whole thing was a fluke or not. The short answer is, No. You don’t get by on 20 years worth of flukes, that isn’t a fluke. Therapy as this title goes are here to the end.
It is a shame that the performance at the bigger venue wasn’t used for this release as the Water Rats isn’t the biggest of venues. Thankfully the music recorded sounds great. The vocals suffer from a bit of too close to the mic distortion, and occasionally the lead missing his breathing cues causing him to sound out of breathe on the first number. There are also occasional spouts of getting the crowd to sing along and calling out to London which there was far too much of at the Forum gig we went to. But thankfully they keep the focus on the music for this recording and not the crowd.
If you are a fan of therapy and you are a fan of live recorded albums then you can’t go wrong really with this two disc set – which is very generous in its quantity. It’s great that the band waited this long as they definitely have the back catalogue to support such a lengthy release.
