Tracks from her upcoming album currently feature on Roxy (Quicksilver) videos and have already been swooped up on a number of movies and TV shows, including BBC3’s OFF THE HOOK, Jennifer Love Hewitt’s film CAFÉ to be released in 2011 and Lindsay Lohan’s LABOR PAINS.
At 18, MARLA boarded a flight from London to LA. Armed only with a suitcase and phone number of one truly great person, she was ready to see where gut ambition could take her. “It’s weird where you can get if you’re willing to work your ass off” and indeed that’s what she did.
She climbed the ladder fast, starting at the LA Film School and went all the way to design feature films, becoming the youngest member of the Art Directors Guild. Although music was always her greatest passion, somehow in that first flirt with the film industry, with its crazy deadlines, artistic demands, not to mention 6am call times, Marla's dream of singing on the big stage was put on hold. “It was my 21st birthday, we were shooting at SIR studios. I was standing on a stage where Madonna sang the day before. Fred Durst was in the next room with Avril Levine singing in the other. It was a wake up call… I was holding a color chart and a walkie-talkie, thinking.. what on earth am I doing?!”
That was 2 years ago, the same time that Marla met hot young US producer Tone and she hasn’t looked back, swinging full circle to her love of music. The doors to his studio opened and the creation began. With her new tracks blasting on the regular play list at Bar Marmont, she headed back to London scoring a place in the finals of Ch4’s Hollyoaks Music Show – Unsigned Act. Collaborating on her first album with the likes of Blair Mackichan and Cutfather, this unstoppable train is on a journey…
Marla’s voice is distinctive and clear, her song writing honest and frank, with a quirky edge. Telling tales from sketches and doodles, if you listen closely, her fun, catchy pop tunes are tinged with angst and soul which is brought to life in her gutsy live performances.
This girl is on a musical mission and ready to give her artistic peers (suggested to include the likes of Gwen Stefani and Feist) a real run for their money.
