Capping off a stunning 2010, Gold Panda was awarded the Guardian UK's First Album Award for his debut album Lucky Shiner. Announced in late January, the competitors included Marina & The Diamonds, Mount Kimbie, Ikonika, and Stornoway amongst others. Described by The Guardian as “a combination of warm, lo-fi electronica, a patchwork of crackly samples and melodies that stick”, the newspaper based its decision upon the fact that Lucky Shiner was “the album the panel have found themselves coming back to the most.” A fair and enjoyable old-fashioned reason for issuing the accolade. Lucky Shiner also made many end of year lists by Pitchfork, Mojo, Stereogum, Mixmag, Rough Trade, The Independent, Drowned in Sound and many more.
As one of the most acclaimed new electronic artist of 2010, Gold Panda has already announced a raft of activity for 2011. A third single from Lucky Shiner, “Marriage”, will be available on March 1st digitally and as a limited 12″ for Record Store Day on April 16th. The single includes reworks by Baths, Star Slinger and Forest Swords. The video for “Marriage” was created by Israeli artist Ronni Shendar (link) on location in India, Germany and Israel during December 2010 and January 2011. The director is also known for her live A/V work with electronic producer Glitterbug (Till Rohmann) with whom she runs the c.sides festival and label.
If that was not enough, Gold Panda continues to support Lucky Shiner with a headlining tour worldwide this Spring including a host of shows at SXSW.
The UK leg being a one off date at XOYO 1st of March.
