TV On The Radio Bassist Dies Aged 34

Gerard Smith, the bass player of Brooklyn alt-rock band TV on the Radio, has died aged 34, following a battle with lung cancer.

A message on the band's website read: “We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and bandmate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer… We will miss him terribly.”

News of Smith's illness surfaced five weeks ago, and it emerged that he was diagnosed shortly after the band had finished recording its new album Nine Types of Light.

The band have cancelled their next few days' concerts.
