Midge Ure in Scottish Election Row

The Labour Party in Scotland is calling for tonight’s show by former Ultravox singer Midge Ure at Glasgow’s O2 ABC to be cancelled – because it might break electoral law.

With elections for the Scottish Parliament just a week away, free tickets for the show, billed as “Midge Ure in Concert Live with the SNP”, were only available through a Scottish National Party website.

And this could be seen as the party “treating” potential electors, which is illegal. In theory, everyone who attends the concert could also be charged with a criminal offence.

The SNP last night denied it was breaking the law, and insisted that the concert would go ahead, calling Labour “the ultimate party poopers”. The party announced the event earlier this month, when Ure endorsed Alex Salmond for re-election as First Minister.
