Moby – Destroyed
To say that Moby is experimental is a bit pointless. And yet while you know when you are listening to music created by this artist, it has to be said he tries to go for a different sound each time round. Destroyed completely demolishes the epic grandeur of his previous album and really dials it back to something largely electronic and simplistic.
The Broken Places is on a first listen is no more than a glorified opening instrumental. But it’s actually a highly addictive track. He is on more familiar territory with Be The One, but for the majority of the record he wavers about as if trapped between worlds and his music never 100% sure of itself, which of course adds to the wobbled and distorted effect.
As usual there are various vocal artists contributing to the songs as well as Moby. And as usual he has picked a good voices to help with the surreal quality of his compositions.
It isn’t going to win him any new fans, or even make much of a dent as a critical slam – but it adds to his music tapestry that long term fans will love. Put together largely while he was on tour and at odd times of the night/morning. It does often feel like music you’d perhaps want to listen to at 3am, as capturing the blurry feel of the world at this time when most are asleep happily in bed.
