Kevin Rutkiewicz: The Singing Footballer

Glaswegian singer songwriter Kevin Rutkiewicz releases his second single next week. Time on Tick is the follow up to his debut, Fair Drawin’ In.

Football fans may well recognise the name: 31 year old Rutkiewicz has been a professional footballer n Scotland for twelve years, playing for Aberdeen and St Johnstone and spending the second half of last season on loan at first division champions Dunfermline Athletic.

Kevin’s second career is as an acoustic singer-songwriter in the style of his musical idols, Paolo Nutini and Ray LaMontagne.

He made his musical debut at the Oxjam Festival in Perth five years ago, which came after local charity organisers read an interview with him saying his hobby was playing guitar. That led to other charity gigs and eventually to support slots for the likes of former Inspiral Carpets frontman Tom Hingley at King Tut’s in Glasgow.

It was there he was spotted by Alex Hamilton, of Glasgow-based Gallus Records, and he put Kevin in touch with producer Gerard McCafferty who has become a close friend, performing with and helping him develop musically. An album, Handwritten, was released on iTunes at the end of last year.

Rutkiewicz has supported the Ultravox legend Midge Ure recently, featured on Talksport Radio as well as on Sky Sports’ Futbul Mundial show and appeared on BBC Radio 5 Live's Victoria Derbyshire show this month.

With the new football season still a few weeks away it seems that Kevin Rutkiewicz has not been content to lie on a beach somewhere over the summer. As well as signing a one year deal to play for Dunfermline in the Scottish Premier League he now has a new single to promote.
