Although the world of music sadly lost one of its most unique female legends in Poly Styrene back in April due to cancer, she had already finished her new Generation Indigo album before she had been diagnosed.
Providing the 21st century with an apt parting gift, the album is reminiscent of X-Ray Spex – the band she once fronted. Following computer-age anthem “Virtual Boyfriend” – the single that trailered the album – comes Poly's first posthumous single “Ghoulish”.
Inspired by Michael Jackson, Poly explained before her death how she had found Jackson's white face and makeup ghoulish, but “I could see that he was probably a nice guy…I never met him, but he seemed soft-spoken and gentle. It was all over the media and I thought I would write that song, but it could be about any goth guy.”
The video comes complete with Michael Jackson impersonators – in keeping with the theme of the song – and was directed by Lauryn Siegel. Remixes for the single come courtesy of Hercules & Love Affair aka New Yorker Andy Butler.
“Ghoulish” is released August 8th on Future Noise Music. More information can be found by following this link.
