Glasgow's The Fiction Becomes Skippy Dyes

Up and coming Glasgow rock band The Fiction will now be known as Skippy Dyes.

The four piece band includes a saxophone in their sound, which they dub Sax Rock, and has played some fine gigs around the city. Back in March they were given a last minute opportunity to support Stiff Little Fingers at their St Patrick’s Day show and impressed a large crowd at the Barrowlands.

The name change comes for two reasons. Firstly the band got fed up being confused with London band Fiction. And secondly, they wanted to mark a new phase in their musical development.

“We were a covers band playing in pubs for about 2-3 months before we started being a creative band,” lead guitarist Greig Miller told me. “The intention was to make a new name for our creative endeavours but we got offered a string of gigs and couldn't think of a name in time.”

So why Skippy Dyes?

“I'm a massive book geek so I was looking at book titles because they often yield some cool names” explained Miller. “We came across the book 'Skippy Dies' by Paul Murray and we were instantly drawn to it. However, we thought the imagery of a dead kangaroo might have been a bit morbid but we liked the impact the name had when spoken. So we did a little play on words and changed it from Dies to Dyes so it would speak the same but read differently.”

The band is looking forward to a bright future and will be releasing an EP next month, with a launch show planned for Nice N Sleazy in Glasgow.

And the name of the EP? ‘We Were Once Fiction'. Makes sense, doesn’t it?
