Open Mic UK is the national music competition for singers and solo artists in the UK, and auditions are coming to Glasgow’s Concert Hall on Saturday 20th August. Thousands of unsigned singers entered last year and this year it’s set to be even bigger!
The singing auditions will be searching for Glasgow’s best singers, singer/ songwriters, rappers and vocalists. The competition is open to all ages, and with an under 16’s category being introduced, it’s a great opportunity for kids for showcase their singing talent.
Singing auditions in Glasgow are open to all genres, so whether you’re into RnB, Rap, Acoustic, Pop or Classical – Open Mic UK has it all. Acts can perform either covers or original material and they’ll be invited to a live audition in front of the industry judging panel. I’m delighted to say that I will be representing Glasswerk as one of the judges!
Those who make it through the audition stage will go on to perform in live shows, in front of a live audience and judging panel, for the chance to sing at the Grand Final. The panel is made up of industry insiders, A&R, vocal coaches and guest celebrities. Last year former Another Level star Dane Bowers and Radio 1’s Ras Kwame were both on the panel.
There’s over £50,000 worth of prizes up for grabs and the winning act will be offered a recording and management contract to develop their music and release their single. Competing acts will also have the chance to perform live in some of the best music venues in the country.
Last year’s under 18’s winner, Hatty Keane, has been signed to BGM Music. Since being crowned the overall runner up of the competition last year, Hatty has been featured in a variety of local, regional and national press, performed live sets alongside Tinchy Stryder and Roll Deep and is currently working on new material.
Previous winner Birdy has recently been a favourite on Radio 1 and is set for a huge career at just 15 years of age.
Singing auditions in Glasgow will be divided into three age categories; 16 and Under, 17-22 and 23 and over. All types of singers, vocal performers, groups and acoustic singer/songwriters are invited to enter Open Mic UK. It’s all about finding an act that has the ability to become a professional recording artist.
So, if you think you’ve got what it takes, get on the mic for Open Mic UK 2011!
Look out for news of the event and the story of my day as a judge later in the month here on Glasswerk.
