ASA – The Advertising Standards Authority has received several complaints from women rights organizations and decided to ban the posters from public display in the UK. But what’s so “overtly sexual” about an image of a half-naked woman holding a pair of silver balls between her legs anyway? The band’s record label resisted bravely and said that the artwork meant to “poke fun at the ridiculousness of the attitude to women, outfits and music in that [1980s] era.” Steel Panther couldn’t possibly mean disrespect to women as they make every effort to look like them.
Unfortunately advertising authorities don’t share the same sense of humour so the guys just keep on singing at the top of their lungs: “death to Britney Spears” and “f**k Mariah Carey”!
For those who’d like to see them, they’re in the UK this spring for four shows, starting at Birmingham’s O2 Academy on March 27 and finishing on March 31 at London’s o2 Academy Brixton.
