Deadbeat Darling – The Bull And Gate, Kentish Town

When Brooklyn-based boys graced the stage at the Bull and Gate, sadly most of the crowd were gracing the bar. But, it took little more than Deadbeat Darling to get into their first song for the audience to realise what they were missing. Very quickly, the room filled with eager ears, wanting to hear what the fuss is all about.

Deadbeat Darling have recently finished their UK tour in the lead up to the release of their next album, The Angel’s Share, and one of the stops was Kentish Town in London. I was lucky enough to attend, as rarely do a band as talented or as humble come across. The guys, playing tracks from both their previous release Weight Of Wandering and the soon to be released LP, infected the night’s crowd with their blend of alt-rock and indie hits.

There were mellow occasions, such as tracks like St Christopher Candle, a track which shows the capabilities of Joseph King’s voice. There were also songs with a much higher tempo and energy to them, including personal favourite from the night, Sweat It Out.

Engrossing audiences here in the UK, as well as filming the gig to be shown across the pond in the States, there is an obvious reason why these guys have such a following.

But, these guys have to be heard to be believed. With closing tracks Promises and Surf India tying up the night, it seemed to close a touch too soon. But, with The Angel’s Share less than a month away, it seems as though this was merely a teaser for something all the more grander to come.

Deadbeat Darling’s new album, The Angel’s Share, will be released on April 2nd, 2012.
