The Futureheads – The Old Dun Cow

Having given the public a preview of their acoustic and a cappella tour during their set on the concourse of St. Pancras station last week and with the release of the a cappella album ‘Rant’ only a week away, The Futureheads have unveiled a video of them performing folk standard ‘The Old Dun Cow’ in the most apt of settings – the pub.

Filmed by Ian West, the video shows just how catchy the folk songs on‘Rant’ can be. The song tells the story of a burning boozer and its dedicated customers who, instead of fleeing the building, decide to consume as much of the stock as possible before the whole pub falls apart. Humorous and engaging, it dispels the myth that all traditional folk songs are less than easy on the ear.

With an album inspired by both contemporary pop (The Black Eyed Peas, Kelis) and the likes of Sunderland folk club veteran Keith Gregson, The Futureheads have already discussed how ‘Rant’ is going to be a gamble, but Ross Millard hopes that fans will be open to the changes:

“A lot of them might not accept songs like ‘The Old Dun Cow’ and ‘The Keeper’, and dismiss them as old-time and medieval. But I’d like them to hear it with different ears and appreciate that we’re doing a modernist version.”

With renditions like this of songs such as ‘The Old Dun Cow’, it’s hard to imagine anyone not enjoying or appreciating the band’s revival of this virtually forgotten genre.

The Futureheads release ‘Rant’ on April 2nd through their own label, Nul Records. They also embark on a UK tour on the same day and will play the following shows:
