Well what to say. The summer season is here folks. It’s here before America, and it’s come in style. Joss Whedon & Co not only have managed to bring together all of the Marvel icons, but they have done it in a highly satisfying and stylish way.
You want Iron Man? Here he is at his wise-cracking and fast-talking best. You want Captain America? Well Mr goody-two-shoes is standing up for all that is right and finding his purpose in the modern world. You want Thor? A streak of lightning later and the hammer wielding god is on hand to bust all shades of colours out of anyone in his way. You want the Hulk? Well, Mark Ruffalo and the green beastie may well be the best kept secret about this film!
The film opens with Shield who are in possession of that bright blue cube (last seen in Captain America: The First Avenger) only for Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to appear and snatch it from their grasp. Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) decides in order to face off this foe he is going to need to resort to desperate measures and sets about assembling our iconic leads.
But as you might expect – these four combatants don’t see eye to eye to begin with before finally resolving to team up and have a final smack-down with Loki and his army. That’s pretty much the gist of it. Interwoven throughout is some very impressive action (whether it’s against the bad guys or against each other) and some hilarious dialogue (not forgetting the odd moment of drama). The interaction of the characters is paramount to its success. Whedon’s script allows for a variety of group and 1 to 1 dialogue which creates a great barom which the series can leap from (Speaking of bases! Wait till you get a look at the place where SHILED run things from!)
And don’t think that Robert Downey Jr. runs off with all the priceless lines (although he has more than his fair share for sure!). Literally every character gets their moments in this film. They get to be true to who they are and impress us from start to end.
Tom Hiddleston’s Loki literally has his hands full going up against these guys, but he really holds his own. Even the supporting heroes Black Widow, Hawkeye, Nick Fury, Agent Coulson and even Maria Hill all have their time to shine.
It’s literally even-stevens right up to the finally fight. When that comes about – everyone is doing their thing, but the stand-out moments easily go to the Hulk. The Hulk perhaps up to this time has been overshadowed by the egos and purpose of his counterparts, but here he is put in the limelight and does not disappoint. To go into details about any of the dialogue or the action would be to spoil the film.
The film is also not without a few niggles, but they are so minor it would be to undermine just what they have managed to pull off. This is the sixth film in the Marvel series, and they really picked the right man in Joss Whedon to bring it to the screen. This is entertainment at its best and deserves every star it gets.
