Brendan Benson - The Ruby Lounge
Live Review

Brendan Benson – The Ruby Lounge, Manchester

Brendan Benson takes to The Ruby Lounge stage on an unfeasibly warm Mancunian evening around 9.30pm, opening with ‘Light Of Day’ – perhaps the most direct cut from his new album ‘What A World’. The driving rhythms and juxtaposition of deceptively introspective lyrics with a glorious, soaring chorus let us know we’re in for a treat, watching a master craftsman at work. Brendan is backed by a solid backing band of drums, bass and guitar. They begin a little heavier than expected – perhaps a nod to his recent live outings with The Raconteurs.
But it is with the introduction of softer elements and the acoustic guitar that Benson’s song writing really shines. In a mid-set selection of songs that includes ‘Cold Hand’s Warm Heart’ ‘Garbage Day’ and ‘Meterie’ (which encourages the biggest sing along of the night), he has the bustling Ruby Lounge in the palm of his hand.
A special mention goes to the performance of the piano led ‘Bad For Me’ the lead single to be taken from the new record. Here Benson’s ear for a melody is showcased to great effect. On this track and indeed throughout the set Benson nimbly navigates his way through the mind field of heart-felt, confessional song writing. He visits, but never lingers at the touchstones of americana, indie and power pop in a way that makes new songs feel as though you’ve known and loved them for years.
As a response to requests from one particularly enthusiastic audience member. The final track from 2002’s superb Lapalco LP ‘Jetlag’ closes the set in epic fashion. Ably assisted by opening act and label mate Young Hines on the acoustic guitar ‘Jetlag’ certainly didn’t disappoint. Benson leaves the stage in Manchester, glass of red wine aloft to rapturous applause from the more than satisfied audience. In truth Benson has such a consistent back catalogue of superbly crafted songs he could have offered up a completely different set list and the faithful would have still gone home happy.
Brendan Benson and co have one more UK gig left on this tour tonight in Glasgow at Oran Mor then it’s off to the US for more shows throughout June, taking in San Francisco, Chicago and Seattle amongst others. (Jetlag indeed!)
