London’s most unconventional and unforgettable duo, Noisettes aka Dan Smith and Shingai Shoniwa, are back with their third studio album, ‘Contact’ out August 27th.
With a career that has stretched over seven years, their fizzy, witty mixture of all kinds of pop, given their own exotic twist, has brought them well known chart smashes like ‘Never Forget You’ and ‘Don’t Upset the Rhythm’. Two years on, Noisettes make their long-awaited return.
“Some bands have a one-size-fits all mantra approach.” says singer Shingai. “They get together because they share identical musical tastes, then never do anything different. We’re two divas with different record collections who constantly introduce each other to new sounds, whether it’s African music, jazz, our own modern hybrid of soul music or new adventures in dance music, there always remains the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll without the clichés. For us, making music means keeping our ears open.”
“‘Contact’ for us, is like a film from beginning to end, musically, lyrically, emotionally.” says Shingai. “The album starts with a big thirty piece orchestra and ends with just Dan and I singing and just the cackling of the wood and the flames of the fire for accompaniment.”
“This album is very personal to me. When we were writing the album, my Mum fought and won her battle with breast cancer. Like my Mum, we’re survivors, we’ve had a lot of knock-backs,” says Shingai. “There’s definitely a sense of wanting to pick people up in certain moments on the album. We just had to do it, it made me aware of wanting to leave something behind, my legacy. I wanted my Mum to feel like I was never going to give in to a bad situation, it reminded me of what I needed to do and how important it is to make the most of your time here on earth. It gave her hope, that’s the most important thing. It gives everyone around you hope, and people need that when they’re fighting something like that. The closer we were getting to the finishing line with the album and seeing my mum improve and winning her battle made me feel like we were giving her something to hope for and everyone needs hope.”
2012 is already looking set to become a monumental year for the band. Having already performed at The Diamond Jubilee Festival in Battersea Park on June 3rd, the band are also part of BT River of Music, a curtain-raiser for the Olympic Games, to be staged over the weekend of July 21-22, and will be headlining Blissfields Festival this weekend.
